You can ride a bike up to 125cc on UK roads.

Under the following conditions:

You must ride with L plates.

You are not allowed to carry a pillion passenger.

You are restricted to bikes with a power output of up to 11kW and an engine size of no more than 125cc.

You are not allowed to ride on motorways.

The CBT certificate is valid for 2 years.

The Category A2 Licence

An A2 licence allows you to:

Ride without L plates.

Carry a pillion passenger.

You are limited to an A2 motorbike (up to 35kW, a power-to-weight ratio of not more than 0.2kW per kg, mustn’t be derived from a vehicle more than twice its power).

Ride on motorways.
